Rev. Karen W. Curry!
For over 30 years, Rev. Karen Curry has been working to improve the quality of life for DMV residents through her service at The Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church (Ward 7). She has also served at The House DC, Inc. (Ward 8), a highly effective after-school ministry she helped shape shortly after it opened in 1999.
Rev. Karen develops and teaches creative, thought-provoking sermons, workshops, and retreats focused on spiritual, social, business, and academic skills, as well as leadership development for children, high school students and adults. She is also a requested moderator and master of ceremonies for meetings and special events.
In addition to ministering to the community, Rev. Karen provides communications services for clients ranging from individuals and small non-profits to Federal agencies and organizations such as DCTV, where she was an on-camera host for the station’s “Student Exposure” broadcast. In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched her own comedic and inspirational program, "The First Lady's SHHOW!" (Spirit-filled Hilarious Hour Of Worship), which she produced and edited. "The First Lady’s SHHOW!" has been lifting spirits nationwide during these trying times.
Rev. Curry is the Co-Convener of the Ward 7 Faith Leaders and serves on the Mayor’s Interfaith Council and the MPD Faith Advisory Council. She is also a Health Navigator with the Leadership Council for Healthy Communities, and a member of the DC Coalition to Support Caregivers, the DC Area Interfaith Gun Violence Prevention Network, the African American Task Force of Infinite Legacy, and DC Health’s “Faith in Vaccine” initiative. Previously, she served on the DC State Athletics Commission; chaired the Enlistment Committee of the DC Baptist Convention; and worked with the Time to Fly Foundation in Reston, VA, a ministry which helps women and children heal from abuse.
Rev. Curry was licensed to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in 2001 and was ordained the following year in 2002. She holds a Master of Theological Studies from Wesley Theological Seminary; a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations from the University of Southern California; and an Associate of Arts degree from Prince George’s Community College where she previously taught a creative and critical thinking course she developed entitled, “Think About It! Write About It! Do Something About It!” She is also a licensed Real Estate Referral Agent focused on empowering families.
In her “spare time,” she enjoys writing and performing her original poetry and raps. She self-published 2020 Vision: Clarity through Chaos, a collection of provocative and insightful poetry about the tumultuous year of 2020. She also published Poetic & Prophetic, featuring her poem, "Colin Couldn’t Stand," which earned an honorable mention in the Beacon newspaper’s arts contest and was featured on Howard University’s television station, WHUT-TV. Her poem, “Violins or Violence?” was featured at Rev. Dr. William Barber’s Poor People’s Campaign Revival in Washington, DC and at an anti-gun violence service at the National Cathedral. Both poems, as well as “The First Lady’s SHHOW!” can be viewed on Rev. Karen’s website, as well as YouTube.
Rev. Karen is happily married to Rev. Dr. Kendrick E. Curry, Pastor of the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church in Washington, DC. The Currys are the proud parents of Keyona and Kendrick Curry, II.
